CHICAGO (AP) - A 15-year-old honor student who was gunned down last year is being remembered at the Chicago school she attended and in Washington.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended Wednesday’s memorial for Hadiya Pendleton at King College Prep. Her great uncle, Nathaniel Pendleton, says he and her parents also were to attend. Wednesday is the one-year anniversary of the day Hadiya was shot and killed in a park about a mile from President Barack Obama’s home on the city’s South Side.

Also Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin paid tribute to Hadiya and her parents on Senate floor.

Her death drew national media attention. After offering his condolences, Obama invited her parents to last year’s State of the Union speech and Michelle Obama returned to Chicago to attend the girl’s funeral.
