SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - The Cochise County Attorney’s Office says an officer-involved fatal shooting in Sierra Vista earlier this month has been found to be legally justified.

Deputy County Attorney Brian McIntyre says letters were sent out notifying the sheriff’s office and Sierra Vista police Thursday.

Officer Michael Rathmann was placed on paid administrative leave pending the attorney’s office’s findings on the Jan. 4 shooting of 49-year-old Michael Estrada.

Police say officers found Estrada in the front yard of the residence with a machete.

Estrada reportedly made aggressive movements and statements about wanting to have a confrontation with officers before moving toward one of them and was shot several times.

The Sierra Vista Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1fDV4ab) that independent investigations of the shooting were done by both Sierra Vista police and the sheriff’s office.
