RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Republican Thom Tillis’ U.S. Senate campaign says it had its best fundraising quarter to date, yet it was still less than half of what Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan raised during the second quarter.

Tillis’ campaign announced Friday the state House speaker raised more than $1.6 million in the three months ending June 30 and has about $1.5 million in cash on hand. Those numbers compare to $3.6 million Hagan’s campaign said this week it raised during the quarter, with $8.7 million in its coffers. Detailed figures are due to federal election regulators next week.

Tillis spent lots of money early in the second quarter because he had a competitive Republican primary in May.

Outside groups have injected millions of dollars into the race through television ads targeting Tillis and Hagan.
