A gunman opened fire inside a hospital near Philadelphia on Thursday, leaving one hospital employee dead and a doctor injured before being shot himself.

Police were on the scene at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, located in Darby at 1500 Lansdowne Avenue, after a shooting was reported around 2:15 p.m., a Chicago ABC affiliate reported.

The attack happened in the hospital’s psychiatric unit. It was not clear what spurred the attack, but the gunman had psychiatric problems, District Attorney Jack Whelan said, according to The Associated Press.

The victim who was killed was described only as a female employee. A doctor suffered a graze wound and was expected to be released from treatment later in the day, Mr. Whelan said. Earlier reports said the doctor had been shot in the head, but that has not been confirmed.

The prosecutor did not say who fired the shot that wounded the gunman but said two guns were recovered from the scene. He said the shooting was still being investigated.

“The scene is secure. Everyone is safe,” Mr. Whelan told reporters.

The identities of the shooting suspect and the victims were not immediately released. Earlier reports said police had one suspect in custody.
