HUNTINGTON, N.Y. — A Long Island father has been arrested for leaving his 2-year-old daughter in a locked vehicle while he went shopping in Huntington.

Police say a passer-by noticed the girl crying in a parked Nissan Frontier with its windows closed in the parking lot of the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue at about 12:40 p.m. Thursday.

The passer-by called 911 and police officers responded to the scene where they broke the vehicle’s window and removed the child.

The child’s father, Melvin Marroquin, returned to the vehicle about 10 minutes later and was arrested on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment. It wasn’t clear if he had a lawyer.

Police say the estimated temperature in the car at the time was about 120 degrees.
