CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the family of Casper boy whose story about brain cancer led to an outpouring of community support.

Special Agent Tina Trimble confirmed to the Casper Star-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1ixwo4D) the investigation into the family of Dorian Layton but wouldn’t discuss details.

Trimble said the Division of Criminal Investigation received a request from the Casper Police Department to investigate the family.

The family gained local attention when Dorian, who is nicknamed “Ninja,” distributed gifts to sick children at Wyoming Medical Center on Christmas Eve and when Casper police named him chief for a day in January.

When reached Tuesday afternoon by the Star-Tribune, the family declined comment.

Layton and his family raised about $1,700 through an online fundraising site in the past five months.
