BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Danielle Lawerence scored 19 points to lead Butler to a 54-52 victory over Newport Central Catholic on Wednesday in the first round of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Girls’ Sweet 16.

Lawerence also had seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block for Butler (29-3), who will face Lafayette in the second round on Friday in Diddle Arena.

Fontasia Jeffries scored 11 points and Jaelynn Penn had nine points and seven rebounds for the Region 6 champions.

Butler shot 46 percent from 3-point range and made 11 of 17 free throws.

Nicole Kiernan scored 19 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and three blocks for Newport Central Catholic (29-5) and Michaela Ware had 15 points for the Region 9 champions.
