GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Rangers moved closer to their ultimate goal of returning to the top of Scottish football by winning the League One title Wednesday - its second consecutive promotion after a financial meltdown.

A 3-0 victory over Airdrieonians at Ibrox - courtesy of Lee McCulloch’s hat trick - gave the 54-time Scottish champions an unassailable 26-point lead over nearest challenger Dunfermline. The team has won 26 and drawn two of its 28 league games this season.

Demoted to the bottom tier in 2012 because of financial mismanagement, Rangers will play in the Championship next season - just one level below the Scottish Premier League and a renewal of its rivalry with Celtic.

Rangers coach Ally McCoist said: “It’s certainly an achievement to win the title… It’s part of the journey back.”
