NEW YORK (AP) - Workers at the site of a deadly building explosion in New York City have dug up two gaping holes in the street and are pumping water out of pipes underground. The water is being poured onto the street.

The city Department of Environmental Protection didn’t immediately respond when asked if there was a water main break.

Firefighters are perched on rooftops surrounding the site of Wednesday’s blast that flattened two buildings in East Harlem.

They’re operating hoses dousing the still smoldering debris from above. The hazy air is filled with an acrid odor.

A crane with iron jaws is picking up debris from the blast and depositing it on the back of a truck to be hauled away. Heavy smoke is pouring out of the debris.
