MILFORD, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police say they have arrested a Harrington man wanted in the death of a 7-month-old girl in his care.
Police say 44-year-old James Hammond surrendered to authorities Friday and was charged with murder by abuse or neglect. He’s being held on $100,000 secured bond.
Hammond and his girlfriend, the infant’s aunt, were caring for Aubri Thompson last month while her parents vacationed. Police say they took the unresponsive infant to Milford Memorial Hospital, where she died.
Police say Hammond was alone with the girl on Feb. 27, when he says she fell out of a crib, but they didn’t seek medical help until the next day. Her death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma and police say her injuries were not consistent with such a fall.
