LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Javier Roper scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead New Living Word to the Class C-Boys’ state title with a 91-72 win over Sicily Island on Friday - its first championship after losing in the semis the last two years.
Roper scored 14 points in the second quarter as the Lions (31-8) stretched a nine-point lead into a 47-31 halftime advantage.
The Lions led by as many as 24 in the third quarter. Sicily Island (22-14) narrowed the gap to 22 early in the fourth quarter, but the Lions scored nine straight points to put the game out of reach.
Tracy Hampton scored 11 points and finished with 28 for New Living Word. Xavious Williams had 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Devion Dunbar led Sicily Island with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Larry Plummer scored 22.
