DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) - A movie about abandoned pooches and the South Carolina volunteers who rescue them from high-kill shelters is scheduled for screening in Darlington.

The Florence Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/O6SQbJ ) the film “The Lucky Ones” is to be shown at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Baptist Church.

The movie highlights Lucky Dog Rescue, which organizes volunteers to transport the dogs hundreds of miles from shelters to adoptive or foster homes. It deals with shelters in Florence and Pickens counties.

Lucky Dog founder Mirah Horowitz says people who give up animals don’t know those are the first to be euthanized, since stray dogs must be kept longer by law in case owners come for them. The movie also shows that it takes up to 20 volunteers to save a dog.
