NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) - There’s a proposal to change the name of East Dix Mountain in the Adirondacks to Grace Peak to honor of the path-breaking climber Grace Hudowalski (hoo-duh-WALL’-ski).

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1npVqsU ) that the proposal was submitted by the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, a group whose members have climbed all of the Adirondack’s 46 major peaks.

Hudowalski - who died in 2004 at age 98 - was a longtime historian for the Forty-Sixers. She was the first woman to climb all 46 Adirondack High Peaks.

The New York Committee on Geographic Names is still gathering information about the proposal. It could soon go before the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

Many hikers already refer to East Dix as Grace Peak.
