MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A former fugitive charged in the 2001 hit-and-run death of an 80-year-old woman on Long Island has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Sebastian Barba was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to assault and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting.

Prosecutors say Barba struck Jean Renison when she was crossing a street in Westbury on Feb. 6, 2001. They say he drove over the elderly woman while a witness screamed for him to stop.

The 36-year-old Barba fled to Ecuador before he was eventually arrested in Panama in 2012.
