GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Pascagoula man has pleaded guilty to the theft of government funds involving money from Social Security’s Supplemental Security Income benefits program.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/POB6CV ) Leroy Pickett will be sentenced June 2 in U.S. District Court in Gulfport.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and an order to repay the money.

An indictment returned in October said Pickett stole about $22,840 in SSI benefits between April 1, 2006, and Oct. 1, 2011.

SSI is a needs-based program to help the aged, blind or disabled who have little or no income.

Federal court records show Pickett pleaded guilty March 12. He had been set for trial March 31.
