DETROIT (AP) - A judge has ordered a psychiatric exam for one of two men blamed for a fire that paralyzed a Detroit firefighter.

The order was made by an Ann Arbor federal judge over the objection of Samson Wright’s attorney.

Detroit firefighter Brendan Milewski was paralyzed while trying to put out a fire at a building in 2010. Wright pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

But the sentence was thrown out because it exceeded the cap in Wright’s plea deal. Wright now has been preparing to go to trial.

The request for a psychiatric exam came from prosecutors. Defense attorney Margaret Raben says the government never questioned Wright’s competency in the past.

The case hasn’t gone well for the government. Another man’s conviction was thrown out in February.
