MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis says it has broken ground on a new performing arts and education center.

The theater’s nonprofit parent company, the Memphis Development Foundation, said more than 200 people attended a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the Orpheum Centre for Performing Arts & Education.

The two-story center will be located in downtown Memphis. It will provide classroom space for musical and technical theater workshops, career assistance for aspiring arts professionals, and training in sound, lighting and nonprofit management.

The center also will have an audio-video lab, a large multi-use rehearsal hall and a 356-seat theatre. The facility will allow for the production of more musicals, concerts, family programs and multicultural events.

Officials say the center’s total cost is $14.5 million. To date, $10 million has already been donated.
