PINEVILLE, La. (AP) - Police say a Dry Prong woman who had been a caretaker for a Pineville woman is facing charges after allegedly forging checks and refusing to return the woman’s vehicle.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/1g3UuFG) 35-year-old Venessa Ann Gauthier was arrested this week and booked with forgery, theft of the assets of a disabled person and unauthorized use of a movable.

Police say Gauthier allegedly cashed multiple checks for $750 and then refused to return the victim’s vehicle after she’d been allowed to use it.

Gauthier was released from jail on a $3,250 bond.

“In this day and time, more and more of our citizens require assistance from caregivers. In some cases, these caregivers take advantage of those they have been hired to help,” said Rapides Sheriff William Earl Hilton. “I urge families that employ caregivers for their loved ones, to keep a close watch on their finances and their wellbeing. We have to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”

It was unclear whether Gauthier has an attorney.
