NEW YORK (AP) - New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to announce the appointment of a longtime planning official as the city’s new parks commissioner.

That’s according to a city official briefed on the decision but not authorized to speak publicly until the Democratic mayor announces the appointment of Mitchell Silver on Friday.

Silver is the chief planning director in Raleigh, N.C., and a former president of the American Planning Association with more than 25 years of planning experience.

An online biography says Silver also was a town manager in New Jersey and a deputy planning director in Washington, D.C.

Silver will replace Veronica White, who stepped down at the end of December.
