DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say an SUV driver who tried to run down some officers has been shot.
A news release says officers were dispatched around 11:45 p.m. Thursday to check several reports of gunshots in a central Des Moines neighborhood. The officers were checking cars struck by gunfire and looking for bullet casings when the sport utility vehicle approached the crime scene.
Police say the officers tried to stop the SUV from running through the scene, but the SUV accelerated toward the officers. Three officers fired at the SUV driver, later identified as 30-year-old Shawntee Deiyane Young, before he raced away.
The SUV was found a few blocks away, and a wounded Young was found inside a nearby residence. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and reported in stable condition.
