WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - The attorney for a Chicago man accused of abducting and molesting a 3-year-old girl is questioning whether her client is fit to stand trial.
Catherine Hatch on Thursday told a Lake County judge that Jose Reyes isn’t cooperating in his defense. Judge Mark Levitt ordered a mental health evaluation for the 28-year-old man.
Reyes, charged with kidnapping and unlawful restraint, is being held in lieu of $5 million bail in Lake County Jail.
Reyes is accused of snatching the girl in October as she walked with her mother and sister to their Mundelein condo and putting her into his vehicle. Authorities say a security camera later recorded him returning the girl to the condominium complex. Authorities say the video led authorities to Reyes.
Reyes is scheduled for trial May 27.
