ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - A judge in Rockford has postponed sentencing for a 30-year-old man found guilty but mentally ill in his mother’s 2009 shooting death.

The Rockford Register Star reports (https://bit.ly/1dxWyRM) Winnebago County Judge John Lowry made the ruling Friday. He delayed sentencing until Monday for Franklin T. Byrd. The judge says he needs more time to study mandatory sentencing on an armed robbery charge against Byrd.

Jurors in October found Byrd guilty but mentally ill on multiple counts of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Byrd killed his 42-year-old mother Leslie Byrd at their home. They say she was found with a dozen gunshot wounds and her abdomen was cut with a knife after she was already dead.

Byrd’s public defender said his paranoid mind was convinced his mother was trying to hurt him.
