State police identify woman killed in I-81 multi-vehicle accident in Augusta County

RAPHINE, Va. (AP) - Police have identified a woman who was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 in Augusta County.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says a car driven by 27-year-old Lara D. Gass of Lexington rear-ended a tractor-trailer and caught fire. Gass died at the scene.

Geller says two vehicles initially collided in the northbound lanes. The tractor-trailer braked in order to avoid the two crashed vehicles ahead of it. Gass‘ car was unable to stop in time and hit the tractor-trailer.

Geller says the tractor-trailer driver wasn’t injured. One person suffered minor injuries in the initial collision.

The accident occurred Tuesday morning near the 210 mile marker.

Geller says the fatal wreck remains under investigation.
