MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana man has been sentenced to 125 years in prison for killing a man who mentored him as a child.

WSBT-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1lcqlY9 ) that Marzano Shelly of Michigan City was sentenced Thursday in the January 2012 shooting death of 73-year-old Charles Harper.

He was sentenced to 95 years for his conviction in Harper’s murder and 30 years for being a habitual offender.

Harper was a military veteran who had reached out to Shelly when he was a child growing up in Gary.

Court documents show that Shelly, who’s in his mid-30s, had only been out of prison for 30 days when he ran into Harper and killed him a few days later.
