PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - A Pendleton murder defendant faces additional charges following violent incidents at the county jail where he is lodged awaiting trial.

Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan says 34-year-old Joseph Quintana Jr. has not been a model inmate.

A grand jury indictment alleges Quintana used a cup and the floor as weapons when he attacked a 52-year-old inmate last year.

Court records show Quintana later got into a second fight. Rowan said an inmate changed the TV channel, and that set off Quintana.

Rowan said a guard stepped in to break up the fight, and Quintana hit him, too.

The East Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/yB0j98 ) Quintana pleaded not guilty to the assaults.

His murder trial is set for Sept. 5. He is accused of fatally stabbing Allen Spencer in Pendleton.
