MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A metro Atlanta man accused of kidnapping a woman from a CVS store and raping her has been convicted of several charges and is scheduled to be sentenced April 9.
A Cobb County jury on Tuesday found Darrious Mathis guilty of kidnapping, carjacking, aggravated assault, weapons offenses and more in an October 2011 incident.
The woman told the court that Mathis forced her to drive to Atlanta from the store in Austell and raped her. Mathis has maintained his innocence and said the woman was buying illegal prescription medication from him at the time.
Mathis’ first case ended in a mistrial in September after his last defense team said the man’s good looks might explain why his sexual encounter with the victim may have been consensual.
