PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Philadelphia man is on trial in what authorities call the beating death of his former girlfriend’s toddler son.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/1eKzfI4 ) reports that a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday that 30-year-old Joseph Zysk “murdered” 3-year-old Jason.

Assistant District Attorney John O’Neill said the defendant lost his temper and punched the boy repeatedly in January 2011.

Defense attorney Evan Hughes called the case “an awful, horrific, unspeakable tragedy” but said it wasn’t murder.

He told jurors that the evidence will show that his client is guilty of nothing more than involuntary manslaughter, a misdemeanor.

Hughes said Zysk wasn’t a “monster” but “a good man who unfortunately made a horrible, horrible mistake.”

The boy’s mother, Daniela Gonzalez, was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty in 2012 to child endangerment.
