PONTE VEDRE BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say an 8-year-old north Florida girl is in serious condition after being hit by a car that attempted to pass the school bus she was walking away from.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The Florida Highway Patrol says a 17-year-old was passing the stopped school bus, which the girl had just exited.

The Florida Times-Union (https://bit.ly/1j3nrCs ) reports the child was heading home from Ocean Palms Elementary school. She was taken in serious condition to Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

School district spokeswoman Christina Langston says there were 10 children on the bus when the child was hit.

The teen was cited for passing a stopped school bus and for hitting the girl.
