COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Candidates running to be South Carolina’s next schools superintendent have introduced themselves to school board members.

The state School Boards Association hosted a meet-the-candidates forum Wednesday in Columbia. The group invited all eight Republican and two Democratic candidates who have announced their candidacy.

Republicans who have announced their candidacy are Sally Atwater, Gary Burgess, Meka Childs, Amy Cofield, Sheri Few, Don Jordan, Elizabeth Moffly and Molly Spearman.

Democratic candidates are Montrio Belton and Sheila Gallagher.

The association says only Atwater and Few did not attend. The association is holding a second forum for candidates in May.

All are seeking to replace GOP Superintendent Mick Zais, who is not seeking a second term.

The two-week filing period for candidates continues through Sunday.
