WINFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A Winfield man is dead following the latest of several accidents on a stretch of Highway 79 in eastern Missouri, but Lincoln County authorities insist that the roadway is safe.

KMOV-TV ( ) reports that some who travel the two-lane highway disagree and are pushing for changes.

Lt. Andy Binder of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department says there were 26 crashes last year on Highway 79 in Lincoln County, two in which people were killed. He says that, statistically, the highway does not stand out.

Binder says the department is seeking a state grant that would fund overtime for deputies to step up traffic enforcement on Highway 79 and other highways.
