LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas health officials say 57 people in the state have now died due to the flu this flu season - the second-highest total on record.

The record for the number of deaths blamed on influenza is the 61 that was recorded during the flu season last year.

Arkansas Department of Health spokeswoman Kerry Krell told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1gNFHQR ) that the flu season starts with the first confirmed cases of the disease and ends with the final cases.

Health officials say flu activity in the state is slowing but the death toll could climb as people fight secondary infections brought on by the flu.
