MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - A 5K race scheduled for the South Carolina coast is intended to support a statewide literacy project.

The first “Book’n It! 5K Fun Run and Walk” is slated for Saturday at Palmetto Island County Park in Mount Pleasant. The event will help raise funds for the “Readers 2 Leaders” program announced at a Statehouse news conference earlier this month.

The project of the 2014 class of Leadership South Carolina will raise money to provide training so teachers can better identify reading problems of students of all ages and all income levels. It will also buy books for elementary schools emphasize the importance of reading.

Those attending the race are being encouraged to bring a book suitable for kids from kindergarten to third grade.
