PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Brown University is kicking off a 15-month celebration of its 250th anniversary.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/MHZHae ) that a campus open house on Friday and Saturday will launch a series of events through the 2015 commencement.

Dr. Jim Yong Kim, a 1982 graduate, president of the World Bank and founder of Partners in Haiti, will deliver Friday’s keynote address. U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, a member of the class of 1983, will deliver the keynote address on Saturday.

Middle school students from across Rhode Island will sample college life on Friday, learning about bats in flight, archaeological digs and Sanskrit.

The Brown Wind Symphony will perform the world premiere of “Brownian Motion,” a work by Patrick Zimmerli.

And a cake that is a giant sculpted replica of University Hall will serve 2,500.
