MILLBORO, Va. (AP) - A controlled burn is planned in the spring at Douthat State Park to reduce the danger of a wildfire and to improve habitat.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation says the burn will be conducted on 170 acres on the park’s western side. The date will be determined by weather conditions.

The department says the burn will reduce a buildup of leaf and limb debris on the forest floor. It also will improve growing conditions for trees and return nutrients to the soil.
