ATLANTA (AP) - A disk jockey was wounded in a shootout with off-duty police officers early Monday behind a nightclub hosting an album release part for rapper Rick Ross, DeKalb County police said.

The off-duty officers were working security at the Velvet Room and in full uniform when they responded to the sound of gunfire behind the club at about 4 a.m. Monday, said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander. They came upon a man who turned and fired gunshots at the officer, Alexander said, prompting the officers to shoot him in the leg.

“They were doing what they were trained to do,” Alexander said. “They took all the necessary actions to protect themselves and each other.”

The wounded suspect was identified to investigators as a DJ who worked at the club, Alexander told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://bit.ly/1cnj3Ou ). According to the nightclub’s website, Ross and Sean “Diddy” Combs had been scheduled to attend a party Sunday night celebrating the release of Ross’ new album, “Mastermind.”

It was the second time since the weekend that gunfire erupted at a party where Combs was scheduled to be a featured guest. On Sunday, two people were shot in the leg in Charlotte, N.C., at a hotel party billed as an unofficial finale to the CIAA basketball tournament. Combs was billed as one of the event’s featured entertainers.

Alexander said he had “no reason to believe” either Combs or Ross were involved in the Georgia nightclub shooting. And police have not linked Combs to the violence in North Carolina.

The wounded Georgia DJ’s identity was not immediately released by police.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative duty pending an investigation, which is standard procedure.
