RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe is declaring a state of emergency amid the winter storm projected to bring snow, ice and sleet to much of Virginia.

The governor’s office announced the declaration early Monday. It authorizes state agencies to prepare to assist local governments in responding to the storm hitting the state throughout Monday.

In a statement, the governor also urged Virginians to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and be prepared for potential power outages.
