TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Officials at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Ariz., say a Grevy’s zebra has died in an accident.

The male zebra named Ajani was 19 months old and was born at the zoo.

Zoo officials say the death occurred Monday morning during preparations for routine vaccinations.

Shortly after being separated from the rest of the herd, Ajani was suddenly startled by another zebra in an adjacent area. He ran into an enclosure barrier and suffered a fractured neck.

Officials say the accident occurred in an interior area of the exhibit not visible to the public.

Zoo keepers witnessed the accident and the veterinary team immediately performed CPR to try to revive the zebra.

An X-ray revealed that the physical trauma to the zebra’s vertebrae wasn’t survivable.
