PHOENIX (AP) - Bureau of Land Management crews with assist from the Arizona Department of Transportation are clearing brush and trees along portions of Interstate 8 east of Gila Bend in an effort to combat smuggling.

Officials say the operation, called Project Daylight, aims to reduce cover used by drug smugglers who often travel across the desert to the interstate and hide or drop off their cargo to be picked up by vehicles.

The effort will occur over the next weeks across a six-mile area east of Gila Bend in the Sonoran Desert National Monument.
