DETROIT (AP) - A veteran of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and its Civic Youth Ensembles is ending his tenure with a concert featuring several ensembles performing some of his favorite choral and instrumental compositions.

Charles Burke’s final concert as conductor of the Civic Orchestra will be Thursday at Orchestra Hall. Selections include Mikhail Glinka’s “Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla” and Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.”

The youth orchestra also will be joined by the Dearborn Secondary Honors Choir and Detroit Children’s Choir on Gwyneth Walker’s “Blessings from the Children.”

Burke is the orchestra’s outgoing senior director of education and artistic director of youth ensembles.

Last month, he was named president and chief executive of The Grosse Pointe War Memorial. The nonprofit center provides educational, civic and patriotic programs, services and facilities.
