JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Senate President Charlie Huggins says committee assignments for bills are not based on who is sponsoring the bills.

Senate Minority Leader Hollis French last week raised the issue of committee assignments.

French noted that his proposed constitutional amendment to strike down Alaska’s ban on same-sex marriage received three committee referrals, compared with two for proposed constitutional amendments on education and a change in the makeup of the Alaska Judicial Council.

French also noted the gas line bill received two committee referrals in the Senate.

In response to a reporter’s question Tuesday, Huggins said people who want to be victims can characterize themselves as victims.

French said he didn’t see the news conference. But he said nearly all bills that have been referred to three committees have come from minority members.
