GASTON, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana school district has agreed to pay a civil penalty after its wastewater treatment plant released chlorine and other pollution into a local waterway.

Wes-Del Community Schools will pay the $1,620 civil penalty for polluting Thurston Ditch with chlorine, E. coli, ammonia-nitrogen and total suspended solids.

The Star Press reports (https://tspne.ws/1f6GLZA ) the school district recently entered into an agreed order with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management over the discharges.

The school acknowledged in the agreement that its wastewater treatment plant has been in significant non-compliance for ammonia-nitrogen and total residual chlorine since August of 2012.

Those problems occurred after the treatment plant was drained, sandblasted and resealed.
