SALEM, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon legislator says he chased down a drunken driving suspect who sideswiped his car on Interstate 5.

Rep. Greg Smith of Heppner described the Sunday incident on the floor of the Oregon House:

Smith says he was driving with his family when a speeding car hydroplaned and struck his vehicle. He says both vehicles pulled over, but the other driver then fled. Smith says he didn’t want the man to get away and followed him to a fast-food restaurant in Wilsonville.

The man fled on foot but then turned back. Smith says he wrestled the driver to the ground and held him until police arrived.

Smith calls it a scary experience and says he’s blessed to be alive.

Police arrested the man on drunken driving and other charges.
