PITTSBURGH (AP) - A meeting scheduled weeks ago between Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center CEO Jeffrey Romoff took on greater significance in the wake of recent protests.

Peduto told KDKA-TV (https://cbsloc.al/1e34pH2) on Wednesday that he supports UPMC employees who want pay raises. He also said that residents should have access to UPMC hospitals no matter what insurance they have.

UPMC has said that beginning next year, people using UPMC facilities at the lowest prices must choose an insurer other than Highmark.

SEIU HealthCare Pennsylvania has been trying to organize blue-collar UPMC workers and wants hourly wages increased to at least $15. UPMC said it already pays well above the minimum wage at $11 an hour and refuses to negotiate with unions that don’t legally represent the workers.
