COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is urging kids to skip the bus or car pool and walk to school.

Wednesday marks the state’s third annual Walk to School Day, an event organized by the S.C. Department of Transportation.

Department officials say it’s part of an effort to increase physical activity among youngsters.

The event mirrors International Walk to School Day held each October. Last year, 277 South Carolina schools registered to participate in the international event.

About 150 schools have registered to participate in the upcoming walk to school event.
