COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s Teacher of the Year is joining lawmakers and some of the state’s future leaders to announce a new program to improve literacy among school children.

A Statehouse news conference scheduled for Wednesday features Teacher of the Year Darleen Sutton, mascots from the University of South Carolina and Clemson University, and 75 students.

The program, “Readers 2 Leaders,” is a project of the 2014 class of Leadership South Carolina, the state’s oldest leadership development organization. It will raise money to provide training so teachers can better identify reading problems of students of all ages and all income levels.

It will also buy books for elementary schools and organize book walks to emphasize the importance of reading.

A 5K race in Charleston later this month will help raise funds.
