ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A service for longtime North Carolina lawmaker Martin Nesbitt is scheduled for next week in his home of Buncombe County.

Legislative officials announced Friday that Nesbitt’s funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at Biltmore Baptist Church in Arden, with a private burial to follow. A visitation will be held before the service at the church.

Nesbitt died Thursday, just three days after he relinquished his post as Senate Minority Leader due to an illness. A spokesman for Senate Democrats said Nesbitt had been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Nesbitt was 67. He spent half of his life in the legislature, first in the House, where he became a top budget-writer. He later joined the Senate, where he became majority leader in 2009 before Republicans took over the chamber.
