MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - A southeast South Dakota student has been appointed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York.

U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson nominated Alexis Blindauer of Mitchell for an appointment earlier this year.

Blindauer is a senior at Mitchell High School. She has won the Kiwanis Academic Award for the past three years.

Candidates interested in attending service academies must receive a nomination from a member of Congress or from the vice president of the United States. Candidates also must meet strict academic and fitness requirements.

Other South Dakota students who have received appointment to service academies this year include: Scout Gambill, who attends Hot Springs High School; Elizabeth Foy, who attends O’Gorman High School; and Daniel Kurtzahn, who attends South Dakota State University.
