RIVERTON, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois woman died and her son was seriously injured after an apartment fire in Riverton.

The Sangamon County coroner’s office says 24-year-old Brittany J. Sullivan died Thursday morning after the fire in an apartment. An autopsy is expected Friday.

Riverton Fire Chief Louie Rogers says the boy, whose age wasn’t released, was eventually taken to the pediatric intensive care unit at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/1g5gwaG ) the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Rogers says Sullivan’s death was the first fire fatality in Riverton since at least 2006.

Riverton is a community of about 3,500 residents that’s seven miles northeast of Springfield.
