AMSTERDAM (AP) - Defending Dutch champion Ajax drew 1-1 against Cambuur Sunday, dropping points but still keeping a sizeable lead over its Eredivisie competitors.
FC Twente, long considered Ajax’s main rival, suffered a 0-1 loss at Go Ahead Eagles. Vitesse Arnhem won 2-1 against NAC Breda and moves into second place, six points behind Ajax.
In Amsterdam, Siem de Jong capitalized on a defender’s mistake and scored in the second minute, apparently setting up an easy victory. However, Cambuur had better chances until late in the second half, after Cambuur’s Martijn Barto headed in a corner kick at 54 minutes to make it 1-1.
Ajax’s best chance to win came on a free kick after Cambuur keeper Leonard Nienhuis held the ball too long, but Kolbeinn Sigthorsson narrowly missed the shot.
