VANDALIA, Ill. (AP) - Three men have been arrested for allegedly poaching more than two dozen ducks in southern Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday the men shot 30 ducks out of season at the Carlyle Lake Wildlife Management Area near Vandalia on March 6.

Arrested for the alleged incident were Steven Dean of Granite City and Wood River residents Bradley Peters and Daniel Groves. The DNR says the men were arrested on felony charges last Friday by Illinois Conservation Police.

Officials say several ducks also were left crippled.

Hunting ducks out of season violates both state and federal laws. Spring duck hunting has been illegal for almost 100 years because that’s when the birds are migrating.

This year’s duck hunting season ended Jan. 7.
